iManage ESG 2024: Leading with Purpose

Clint Crosier

General Counsel, iManage

At iManage, we’re not just dedicated to providing the knowledge economy with cloud-native solutions that empower organizations to work more productively, collaboratively, and securely – we’re dedicated to doing it the right way.

This dedication is encoded not just in our core values, but in the concrete things we do and the steps we take as an organization – and they are on full display in the iManage 2024 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report.

ESG in Parallel with Strategic Growth

The iManage 2024 ESG Report highlights significant strides in ESG initiatives, reflecting our commitment to sustainable growth and ethical business practices.

Focusing primarily on calendar year 2023, the report takes a broad sweep and covers 100% of iManage global operations.

Before diving into details around iManage’s ESG priorities – People and Culture, Environmental Responsibility, and Governance and Ethical Business – it’s worth noting that these multifaceted efforts occurred during a period of remarkable growth and ongoing evolution for the company.

iManage secured a strategic investment from Bain Capital in 2023, fueling expansion and innovation. Our global workforce surpassed 1,000 employees in 2023 at the same time that total global customers exceeded 4,100, and we experienced 24% year-over-year growth as a company.

In the midst of this busy and exciting time, we launched iManage AI, taking the time to find the best ways to leverage artificial intelligence responsibly – so that our customers have a secure and ethical foundation to build off and deliver better business outcomes.

Throughout, we remained laser-focused on ESG, because we recognize its importance to who we are and how we operate.

People and Culture: Key programs and resources make a difference

As our business evolves, so do our stakeholder relationships. We seek to maintain open lines of communication with key stakeholder groups – and we strive to be a workplace where we empower each employee to apply their skills in the most meaningful and impactful ways.

In January 2023, iManage launched a best-in-class flexible time off policy called iMAway that meets the diverse needs of our global employee base, empowers our employees to be owners of their work/life balance, and builds upon a foundation of trust and respect.

2023 was also the first full year that our flagship manager enablement program – iManager – was in force, providing iManager 101 workshop series for all new managers who came into a people leader roll in 2023.

The introduction of the DE&I (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Vision and Strategy – and initiatives like iBelong – emphasize a culture of inclusivity and belonging that our employees experience both as individuals and members of the iManage community.

These efforts make an impact: In 2023, we achieved the highest employee engagement scores to date. Our employee retention rate was 92.72% in 2023, and on the diversity front, women make up 29.04% of the workforce and 25% of management positions. While there is more work to be done, this is a workplace we can be proud of.

Environmental Responsibility: Making admirable strides

iManage is making admirable strides on environmental matters and is committed to offsetting its greenhouse gas emissions and reducing its carbon footprint through strategic initiatives.

To that end, iManage has increased its usage of renewable energy, purchasing 523 MWh of electricity from wind power in 2023. Both our London and Belfast offices now purchase 100% wind-generated power.

In 2023, 85% of our leased office space was certified under a green building scheme – an increase from 72% in 2021.

Our usage of data centers represented 36 percent of our companywide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2023 — the single largest category within our GHG inventory. However, we are helping to offset our emissions through the purchase of high-quality carbon offsets and Green-e® certified renewable energy credits (RECs).

Additionally, as we shift more of our customers to the cloud, we expect the carbon intensity of our platforms to decrease, particularly as our virtual data center providers work toward goals of using 100 percent renewable energy. Together, these combined steps and actions can help move the needle in the right direction on the environmental front.

Governance and Ethical Business: Taking a leadership position

iManage maintains a variety of policies governing our employees’ and suppliers’ conduct with respect to ethics and responsible business practices.

iManage employees are required to complete an annual Code of Conduct training to ensure that they maintain up-to-date knowledge of our company policies, follow our procedures, and demonstrate ethical behavior. In 2023, a third-party auditor ensured that 100 percent of our employees completed their annual Code of Conduct training.

We know that our responsibilities for ethical business extend beyond the organization and its people to the products and technology we develop that our customers rely on. As a leader in the knowledge management industry, one of our most essential roles is to enable the secure, confidential flow of proprietary data and knowledge

iManage’s proactive approach to data security and privacy sets a high standard in the industry. We embrace continuous improvement through the use of the latest tools and best practices, and we have taken a number of proactive steps to counter and anticipate new threats to our internal data networks — which are completely separate from our customer-facing iManage Cloud environments.

Because artificial intelligence is at the heart of the iManage growth strategy, we believe that the responsible implementation of AI is technology’s most critical obligation to society. iManage AI is built into the fabric of the iManage cloud platform leveraging Zero Touch, Zero Trust, and data domicile security principles. iManage is actively working with customers as part of our Early Access Program to validate the results they see with generative AI, and to ensure the approach includes the right security and governance protections.

Overall, our commitment to growth, sustainability, and ethical business practices remains not just strong, but central to us as an organization.
