"Remember Project Delta? Bill Thompson was leading it, Energy Finance was funding it, and it closed about a year ago. Can you pull the details? We're pitching something similar."

If that kind of scramble sounds familiar, you're not alone. It's the everyday reality inside organizations where valuable precedent, expertise, and outcomes sit locked away in scattered files and someone's memory rather than within easy reach. That was the inspiration for our recent webinar, "iManage Insight+ in action: Putting your collective knowledge to work," which I recently hosted along with Senior Director of Product Management Alex Smith.

Why unstructured knowledge is a growing liability

In part to remedy the above scenario, organizations are investing in AI at an unprecedented rate. According to the iManage Knowledge Work Benchmark Report 2026, 85 percent of legal businesses are piloting, implementing, or already using AI, yet only 17 percent say their AI tools are fully integrated and widely used.

Smith and Matthews traced that gap back to a concept that has rapidly become the focus of the ongoing drive for AI that lives up to its promise: context. AI that draws from an entire document management system (DMS) without understanding which matters, deals, or precedents actually matter, and why, leads to wasted re-searching, summaries built on outdated information, and real compliance risk.

From documents to decisions

iManage Insight+ closes that gap by mapping unstructured DMS content to structured business data, creating a secure, dynamic layer of institutional knowledge. The session unpacked three ways that frequently plays out day to day:

  • Centralized control: Insight+ uses a need-to-know security model that lets locked-down firms securely index and surface institutional knowledge, so knowledge workers can find critical precedent and matter context without ever breaching access boundaries or ethical walls, and without content ever leaving the DMS.

  • Profitability enhancement: Locators and landing pages reduce billable waste by surfacing precedent instantly instead of losing hours to manual search, while turning unstructured work product into a lasting, searchable asset that protects institutional memory and speeds up onboarding.

  • AI trust and precision: Rich metadata acts as a secure guardrail, keeping AI models away from unvetted, sensitive documents, while giving teams a single, AI-agnostic connection point so they can switch tools without losing that context.

Along the way, Smith and Matthews ran through live scenarios, including tracking down every past client interaction with a specific government agency and assembling a team with the right cross-border experience for a new matter, all from within Insight+.

Built to connect, not to isolate

Rather than relying on manual tagging, Insight+ links directly to the business systems organizations already use, from practice management and CRM tools to HR and finance platforms, aggregating context from one connection point. That combination of speed and security is ultimately what protects a firm's reputation for quality, consistency, and client trust, matter after matter.
